Thank you for this - I've just come across this info and wished I'd seen it years ago when I was advised to buy single for my shetland fleece. Inexperienced I didnt know that my sheep had a double coat until recently. Yours is the best video Ive seen on prepping double coated fleece. Off to buy some double combs.

Spinning from a prepared roving like that will produce a worsted spun yarn. Point well, taken- If you have to fight the wheel or the Roving then you are doing something wrong. A great video for beginners.

@@BethSmithCouture I am saving up to get my first set. Friends who raise Scottish Blackface sheep are giving me a fleece. Since they are double-coated with a lot of kemp, I'll really need the combs to process it
That pinky plaid skirt is a miracle. I love it. In general more plaid. Listening to you talk lightens the burdens on my soul.
For combing milk, I’ve had fantastic luck using Cowboy Magic detanglers. Thank you for mentioning the risk of rust - I now oil my tines with blobs of coarse wool after using any product with even a little water in them. I was lucky to catch the beginnings of rust on my Valkyries. I shudder to think of what could have happened if I left them for longer than a few days!
P.S. this video was super helpful when I started fleece processing, and it’s still helpful with a year and a few dozen fleeces since I last watched this.

I know this is an older video but it's extremely informative. If you could only have one set of combs would you choose single or double pitched?
Absolutely double pitch. Single pitch combs are mainly used for preparation for another step. A set of double pitch combs can do the full job.
